Step into the world of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg and explore original works from this talented Black Country cartoonist. Best known for bringing iconic characters like Desperate Dan and Korky the Cat to life, Charlies work featured in beloved DC Thomson comics including The Dandy, The Beano, Topper, and Judy throughout the 1960s to 1980s. He also drew nearly 200 postcards for Bamforths.
This exhibition presents a carefully selected collection of Charlie’s work, generously loaned to the Heritage Centre from the family archive. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the legacy of an artist often described as the Black Country’s “best kept secret.”
Despite his success, Charlie remained unassuming, rarely speaking of his accomplishments and viewing his passion simply as his everyday work.
Copies of the book “Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg – The Black Country’s Best Kept Secret” will be available for purchase at the Heritage Centre. In tribute to Charlie’s memory and in recognition of the illness that shaped his later years, 50% of all proceeds from book sales will be donated to dementia charities, supporting vital work for those affected by the disease.
The exhibition will run from 1st May to 26th June and will coincide with both the Rik Mayall Comedy Festival and the National Year of Reading.
