The Salt Story

At the centre of the museum experience is The Salt Story, an engaging exhibition that reveals how natural brine springs beneath the town made Droitwich one of the most important salt-producing centres in Britain. Through interactive displays, archaeological finds and multimedia exhibits, visitors can explore how salt production influenced the town from prehistoric and Roman times through the Saxon and Medieval periods, and into the Victorian era when Droitwich developed into a renowned spa destination.

Droitwich Calling

The museum also tells the story of Droitwich’s surprising place in modern technological history. In Droitwich Calling, visitors can step into the world of early broadcasting and discover how the powerful Droitwich Transmitting Station, built by the BBC in the 1930s, carried radio programmes across the country and beyond. Through historic photographs, objects and personal stories, the exhibition explains how “Droitwich” became a familiar name seen on radio dials throughout the UK.

Research & Collections

Behind the scenes, the Research and Collections held at the Heritage Centre help preserve the history of the town for future generations. Our archives include artefacts, documents and memorabilia covering key themes such as the salt industry, the famous brine baths, local social history, and the Droitwich Transmitting Station. These collections provide a valuable resource for visitors, historians and researchers interested in learning more about the people and industries that shaped the town.
